The Five Pillars of the Immune System- Command & Control

Hi everyone.we are blogging about the Five Pillars of our immune system: Power Blood Command & Control, Hunters and Cell Walls

This  blog covers the command and control system and what micronutrients are  needed for cells to be able to ask for help and then tell everyone to stand down, help is no longer needed.

The command and control network is called the Eicosanoid system. Our immune system uses two types of signals.  The signals that call for help are pro-inflammatory,  telling the body to increase blood flow (hence why an ankle sprain swells up) and release the hunters (various classes of white blood cells). Anti-inflammatory signals tells others that all is clear and ok to stand down.

The term eicosanoid comes from an Omega 6 fatty acid called Arachidonic Acid which has 20 carbons along its backbone.   Arachidonic Acid is an enzyme that is used to form both pro & anti-inflammatory signals.  Eicosa is Greek for the number 20 hence why the name.

The signals for "help" are made using Arachidonic Acid plus other Omega 6 fatty acids.  The "all clear" or anti-inflammatory eicosanoids are made with Arachidonic Acid and Omega 3 fatty acids.

My blog about blood  pointed out that industrialized diets increased our intake of Omega 6 by 10 X. We are really good at turning on our pro-inflammatory response but sending out the all clear? not so much.  Modern diets lowered our intake of Omega 3 fatty acids.  This imbalance in Omega 6 to Omega 3 biases our body to be in the mode of always asking for help.  The stress signal also calls for the mitochondria to make more power,  which in turn creates more toxic surplus reactive oxygen species(ROS) that deplete the micronutrients needed for proper immune system operation and ultimately our ability to make power.

The blood blog (ugh..sorry) covered where to get Omega 3 micronutrients into your diet.  No need to repeat.

What micronutrients are required to make arachidonic acid?  Two key ones are  linoleic acid and CBD.

If you eat nuts, seeds & legumes and grains then you get linoleic acid, an Omega 6 fatty acid in your diet.  Modern diets are full of the oils of nuts and seeds rich in linoleic acid such as corn oil. We have  plenty of Omega 6 to make arachidonic acid.

What about CBD?

We make CBD in our bodies! If all is well, there is no need to take CBD supplements including the ones we sell to boostyou  immune system.

CBD, however, is an antioxidant. If we are experiencing pain, anxiety, lacking sleep, or injured/infected then we are under stress.  Any time we are under stress the eicosanoid system send out the SOS signal which gets us ready for flight or fight. Both reactions require increased power production,  which in turn increases surplus ROS. Without powerful antioxidants like astaxathin, micronutrients including CBD get oxidized by ROS. No CBD, no arachidonic acid and no ability to communicate.

All of my customers are aware that until recently CBD was considered a class 1 narcotic along with THC.  For years, very little scientific study was funded in the USA on how CBD really works.  I
